More broadly, the 2023 annual report from the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) indicated that millennials (born between 1981 and 1996) now represented 22% of global cruise passengers, while Generation Z (born 1997 to 2012) made up 14%.

If space is a priority for you, consider comparing the passenger-to-space ratio (PSR) of different ships to find ones that are less likely to feel overcrowded. To calculate PSR, simply divide the ship’s gross tonnage by its passenger capacity.

For example, say your ship’s Total Gross Tonnage (GT) is 100,000, and the total number of passengers is 2,500.

100,000 GT / 2,500 passengers = PSR of 40. This means there are 40 gross tons of ship space available for each passenger. Higher PSR values generally indicate more spacious accommodations, which are a good indicator of a more comfortable cruise experience.

Another useful tip is to avoid ships on their inaugural voyage or those recently refurbished, as these are often more popular with cruise-goers.

It’s not just the number of passengers on board: busy ports mean bustling crowds onshore, too. Cruise destinations who have seen the highest percentage increases of travellers in recent years include the Mediterranean, North America’s West Coast, South America and Alaska.
