Protests in the Canary Islands
Brits just can’t get enough of the Canary Islands’ sandy shores and that glorious sunshine that seems to never take a day off. But thousands of locals have been hitting the streets in protest in Lanzarote and Tenerife over the impact of tourism.
Locals argue that the huge amount of tourists visiting their small islands is putting undue pressure on the environment, infrastructure, and housing supply. They’re calling for limits on tourist numbers and a suspension on all tourism development projects.
The CEO of TUI has insisted it’s safe for holidaymakers to visit: “The Canary Islands, and Tenerife in particular, are a safe tourist destination”. And the regional tourism chief confirmed that the Canary Islands remain open for business: “It is still safe to visit the Canary Islands, and we are delighted to welcome you”.
Venice’s new tourist tax has launched
Venice is one of the world’s most popular destinations, and from April 25 2024, day visitors will need to pay a €5 entry fee to enter Venice.
The fee is part of a trial that will be enforced every weekend between 8.30am and 4pm (excluding June 1 and 2) until Sunday July 14 2024. The idea is to try and discourage visitors on days when the city is likely to be at capacity.
If you don’t pay the fee, you could face a fine up to €300, and officials will be carrying out random checks. It won’t need to be paid if you’re staying overnight, but you’ll still need to register your trip online.
Milan lifts ban on ice cream after midnight
Back in 2013, Milan tried to put a stop to enjoying ice cream and pizza on its streets after midnight, and last month, they gave it another try. But following widespread criticism from both locals and tourists, the city’s council quickly stepped back from their plan.
The proposed ban was to protect the “tranquility” for local residents, but who doesn’t cherish a traditional gelato under the Italian moonlight? The new law will now focus on drinks, especially alcohol, as part of a crackdown on night-time party-goers causing chaos in the city.
