Airport liquid rules still apply
Airports in the UK are introducing new 3D scanners so that travellers won’t be restricted to 100ml of liquids. But airlines have issued a warning to passengers travelling this summer that although these rules are gradually being phased out, not all airports are on board just yet.
A deadline of 1 June had been set by the government, but major hubs London Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Manchester have all been given an extension until summer 2025 to install the new scanners.
They have been successfully installed at Aberdeen, Birmingham, Teeside and London City Airports. But ABTA suggest still sticking to the 100ml rules, as many overseas airports also don’t have the new scanners in place yet. So, keep those little plastic bottles for now!
Balearic Islands at capacity
Travel operator TUI has warned the Balearic Islands have ‘reached capacity’ and suggest holidaymakers book elsewhere following recent anti-tourism protests across Spain.
Locals in several Spanish holiday hotspots have been protesting about over-tourism and the impacts it’s causing. Demonstrations have been held in Mallorca, Lanzarote and Tenerife as local people demand something is done about soaring rental costs and house prices.
Anti-tourism protesters have also warned that they could disrupt operations at Palma de Mallorca Airport as the summer holidays begin.
New visa rules for Thailand
Here’s a piece of good news for those with a case of wanderlust. From 1 June 2024, UK travellers will be allowed to stay in Thailand visa-free for up to 60 days, increasing from 30 days.
Thailand’s government announced the approval of longer stay periods for tourists, as well as a new five-year visa for remote workers and relaxed rules for retirees. The new visa policies reflect Thailand’s commitment to rejuvenating its tourism industry by attracting a diverse range of visitors and supporting the economy.
